I thought the same thing. Watching Springsteen here is like watching a nauseating replay of De Niro. Springsteen has spent his entire career posing as a working class troubadour. Now, as he ages, the facade has all but disappeared. He’s a rich elitist who feels somehow qualified to advise the rest of us on how we should vote. The only thing he has in common with the fictional characters in his songs is his lack of sophistication, although in his case the term lack of intelligence would be more applicable. It’s too bad these entertainers can’t keep their traps shut for the sake of their artistic work. Now that it’s become so obvious what a fraud he is, his music takes on a new (lack of) meaning. He’s certainly not the first fool to throw away their legacy (Neil Young, among others, comes to mind in recent times). Unfortunately, it feels like a gut punch to those one time fans who thought, or perhaps wished, that their musical heroes were above such pettiness. Nevertheless, in the end, reality is more important than fantasy and I guess I should actually be grateful. So thanks Bruce and Neil for the hefty dose of reality, even if it was at your own expense.
